Wireless Networking

The amount of people trying to sell wireless networking has increased considerably. I get an offer through almost every week. So what is Wireless networking and what can it do for you?

At present you can go for three network wiring solutions (to connect your computers together to a server and the internet)

• Wired network, Wires running from a Hub or switch connect into a network card in every computer and into an internet router

• Wireless Network, which replace the majority of the wire for wireless connections.
• Mixed Network, a wired backbone is supplimented by wireless in places where wireless is easier to install than wires.

*The speed is shared between all the computers using that access point causing Network intensive programs to slow down

I would recommend wireless for those situations where wired would ruin the building and you only need to share files or access the web over the network. For server client situations which use more network bandwidth and wiring is not an issue wired network is still king. I suspect in the long run most people will use the mixed model using wireless in class with laptops and wired for other computers.
